Abstract:
This communication presents an experience of interdisciplinary creative research initiated in the classrooms of Ceramic Coatings Projects of the Escola d'Art i Superior de Disseny (EASD) of Castelló, a public center of plastic arts and design integrated in the Higher Institute of Artistic Teaching of the Valencian Community (ISEACV). A teaching action was carried out jointly by the piano teacher José Luis Miralles and the ceramic teacher Alicia Rodríguez who, under the name "Sonotrazos" proposed to the students the realization of ceramic coatings that could be interpreted later as music scores. Specifically, the design of decorated pieces in which the characteristic elements of visual plastic language such as forms, textures, graphics or color would be transferred to the musical and sonic domain by a musician.
The value of Sonotrazos project in the training of design students lies precisely in the curricular enrichment from an interdisciplinary experience that accentuates creative development and whose results are shown and exhibited in other areas (e.g. artistic field), sometimes not so distant from commercial circuits. New applications and uses of ceramics are pursued, closer to the so-called author design.
Students showed great interest in the project and evident satisfaction with the final results, despite the initial lack of knowledge about other types of unconventional scores (i.e. graphic scores). The final pieces were exposed from November 15 to 19, 2017 in the 4th MARTE edition, International Fair of Contemporary Art of Castellón and also on May 25, 2018 at the Espai Obert Les Aules de Castelló.
While Sonotrazos project was being developed in the classrooms, the idea of building a big ceramic music score was pursued honoring a recently deceased artist, designer and teacher of the school. This ceramic score was named “Vicent Vidal in Memoriam”. Authors proposed it as an example of the involvement, also by teachers themselves, in an artistic research exploration. The figure of Vicent Vidal was proposed to students as an opportunity to educate in values due to his suffering as a victim of violence in the exercise of his teaching activity. The score, made of fragments of ceramics and glass reflecting his own graphic work, aims to enhance his courage to face the situation of extreme violence maintaining his personal language: warm and friendly until the end of his days. The importance of social support in these situations is also highlighted. The premiere of the work was made on May 25, 2018 at the Espai Obert Les Aules de Castelló. While the final installation of the ceramic score to be placed at the entrance of the EASD library in Castelló is finalized, and in order to keep his memory alive, authors participated on May 10, 2019 at the Nit de l'Art de Castelló with “Vicent Vidal in memoriam life performance”. This temporal installation was made of physical excerpts from the ceramic score accompanied by QR codes that refers to the web vicentvidalinmemoriam.jlmirall.es in which the link to the musical interpretation is explained and performed. Keywords:
