Abstract:

The student voice is becoming increasingly influential in higher education. So, when students call for a change in the way your institution uses technology to support teaching and learning, you need to listen.

But it is not as simple as responding immediately to student demands. You need to get faculty staff on side, get budgets aligned and make sure that any new investment in technology will have a positive impact on achievement.

In this session, Dr Louise Robson, senior lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Sheffield, will share her tips – and the lessons learned – from responding to the student-led demand for the latest lecture capture technology to be rolled out across the institution.

Dr Robson will talk about:
• What can be done when the student voice is at odds with the faculty voice – find out how Sheffield tackled fear that the widespread roll out of lecture capture technology would result in a fall in attendance and how they got academics on board.
• How budgets can be aligned to deliver what the student body wants
• The steps taken to help ensure the project had an impact on outcomes – how to make sure you put inclusive technology in place that will improve the experience of students, lecturers and learners with complex needs.

Dr Robson will be joined by Chris Clow, University of Sheffield’s learning and teaching systems manager.
