Abstract:
“Research has extolled the potential of transmediation to expand learners’ analytical and critical insight. However, this approach requires teachers prepared to offer this multimodal way of knowing” (Hadjioannou & Hutchinson, 2018). This new innovative strategy, developed by the presenter, and supported by social constructive theory, offers educators and researchers specific information about the strategy. Learners who engage in transmediation translate information from one sign system, such as printed or oral communication into another, such as poetry, drawings, or music. This process has potential to help learners develop insights and generate new ways of interpreting qualitative concepts and information. Followed by students' individual transmediated representations of information, the strategy provides opportunities for collaborative student groups to have conversations about what they consider confusing and also explain how they developed understanding of printed, or verbal communication. Theoretical underpinnings will be explained and the presenter and doctoral students will demonstrate the strategy.
