Abstract:
In an era of increasing complexity in higher education, academic teaching requires not only disciplinary expertise but also adaptive presence, emotional regulation, and reflective leadership. This study examines how lens-mediated self-observation enables a lecturer to identify implicit embodied patterns and intentionally recalibrate pedagogical interaction. Grounded in visual autoethnography, the research conceptualizes teaching as a performative practice and positions self-regulation as a core professional competence for academic leadership.

Methodology and Research Question:
The study explores how gesture analysis through visual autoethnography shapes a lecturer’s self-regulation and performative presence. Using an AI-supported Human-in-the-Loop framework, the research integrates systematic visual documentation (video and still images), reflective journaling, and AI-assisted analysis. Within this framework, AI functions as a metacognitive mirror, augmenting human interpretation rather than replacing it, and enabling deeper awareness of embodied teaching practices.

Findings:
The analysis revealed a transformation in pedagogical presence across three interconnected dimensions: spatial regulation, embodied restraint, and emotional presence.
The spatial regulation dimension reflected a shift from podium-centered authority toward eye-level engagement with students. Student feedback highlighted this relational change, describing “a real connection between people” . There was a good and comfortable atmosphere”. Students expressing appreciation for direct interaction, suggesting a reduction of formal distance even within hybrid learning contexts.
The embodied restraint dimension emerged through deliberate modulation of gestures to support learner autonomy. Students described a safe environment where “learning occurs when I am ready to ask questions and not be afraid,” and where mistakes were viewed as part of the learning process. By practicing pedagogical restraint and avoiding immediate answers, the lecturer created space for students to explore uncertainty and develop independent problem-solving skills.
The emotional presence dimension combined attentive seriousness with empathetic warmth. Students noted that “the lecturer’s care provides trust and love,” reflecting the importance of relational pedagogy.
AI-assisted analysis also revealed subtle gaps between pedagogical intention and embodied enactment, strengthening real-time self-monitoring and reflective teaching practice.

Discussion and Conclusions:
The findings suggest that care-oriented, dialogic teaching does not compromise academic rigor; rather, emotional presence enhances the relational climate and strengthens students’ capacity to engage with complexity. Through spatial regulation and embodied restraint, the lecturer created an autonomy-supportive environment that encouraged active participation and reflective learning.
The innovation of this study lies in integrating AI-assisted visual autoethnography as a metacognitive augmentation tool for academic teaching. By functioning as an analytical partner, AI refines professional subjectivity while preserving interpretive depth. The study therefore proposes a paradigm of Conscious Pedagogical Performance, bridging emotion and cognition and redefining reflective leadership in higher education
