Abstract:
Schools generally are not, and do not need to be, on the cutting edge of technology. There is undue expense involved and seldom solid evidence of real pedagogical value. However schools tend to lag too far behind the technological curve and fail to anticipate or create the pedagogy necessary to use the common technology tools of the day. Educators need to be aware of what is available now and what is coming in the near future that will impact education. Education needs to prepare for new technologies rather than always playing the “catch-up” game.

This presentation gives a brief history of technology interfaces, describes the current state of technology that students currently possess and provides an overview of current and coming technology interfaces that will have a direct and profound impact on education. These are categorized in terms of current, near and distant interface developments. The aim is to enhance awareness of the possible technologies so as to allow educators to begin thinking about the implications of these changes. This awareness will hopefully lead to preemptive pedagogical planning.
