Abstract:
In some Peruvian universities educational programs are implemented to form artistic competences, which influence the students’ self-esteem. And many of those programs include dances as educational strategies. And it is necessary to evaluate the influence of the dance education. For it, the present study aims to identify the influence of dance practice on the self-esteem components (self-knowledge, self-concept, self-appreciation, self-acceptance and self-respect) in university students. The participants were 202 university students (115 women (56.9 %) and 83 men (41.1 %) between 16 to 36 years old (Mage = 19.01, SD =3.11). 103 (51.0%) of them don’t practice dance and 99 (49.0%) does practice dance. One concludes. It is observed the self-esteem increases with the age. Then, Student’s t analysis identified women having a higher mean in the self-concept (Mean=4.29, p<.05) unlike males (Mean=4.00, p<.05). Finally, Student’s t analysis identified dancer students having a higher mean in all the self-esteem components unlike not dancer students (p<.001).
