IMPLEMENTING MICROCREDENTIAL SYSTEMS FOR BLOCKCHAIN SKILLS IN LIFELONG LEARNING PATHWAYS

Abstract:
The rapid evolution of digital technologies has significantly increased the demand for specialized competencies that traditional higher education programmes often struggle to address quickly. Blockchain technology represents one of the emerging domains requiring interdisciplinary expertise that combines software engineering, cybersecurity, cryptography, regulatory awareness, and ethical considerations. At the same time, labour markets increasingly require flexible mechanisms for continuous reskilling and professional development. Microcredentials have therefore emerged as an important educational instrument supporting lifelong learning and modular competence development.
This work explores the implementation of a blockchain microcredential system developed within the Erasmus+ INVESTech project. The system establishes a structured learning pathway consisting of three progressive microcredentials aligned with the European Qualifications Framework (EQF Levels 4–6). These microcredentials cover blockchain fundamentals, applied smart contract development, and the design of secure and ethically responsible blockchain systems.
The learning pathway integrates theoretical instruction with practical laboratories, case studies, and project-based learning activities using contemporary blockchain development tools such as Ethereum test networks, MetaMask, and Remix IDE. The development process involved labour market analysis, stakeholder consultations, and collaboration among European partners.
The implementation demonstrates how modular microcredential systems can support the development of emerging technology competencies while enabling flexible lifelong learning pathways that respond to rapidly evolving digital skill requirements.Keywords:
