Abstract:
The assimilation of theory may be improved with practical experiences. To assess this possible strengthen of knowledge, we design a practical experience in the toxicology laboratory. The experience was developed with a pilot group, divided in small groups of 10 students. The goal was to test whether theoretical knowledge is better learned when working in practice.

Our initial issue was to select a cross topic to other subjects in toxicology, it had to entail clinical and practical interest to make a wide-ranging experience. Therefore, after several proposed topics we selected a foodborne intoxication.

After the practical experience, we evaluate the obtained results with a true/false test with a small opinion survey. The survey design was as follows: The first part we intended to obtain objective data on how students acquire theoretical knowledge. And the second part of the survey helps us understand how the experience was evaluated by the students.

Each participating student passed the test. More than a half got between 85 and 100% of the answers correct. Hence, the students strengthen their subject knowledge after the practical experience in the laboratory.

Regarding the second part of the survey completed by the students, it was designed to show their preferences. Most students found the experience an attractive and effective method compared to classic lectures. Interestingly, the degree of correlation of what was learned with what was taught in the theoretical classes was not so interesting to them. This may be because we chose a transversal topic that had not yet been explained in the theoretical classes.
