Abstract:
This study attempted to formulate key academic performance indicators (KAPIs) for staff at Comprehensive Universities (CUs). Following an extensive literature survey and a quantitative and qualitative research design two questionnaires were developed and mailed to 243 academics and 12 members of Management. One hundred correctly completed questionnaires were received from academics and 11 from members of Management. Using a process of triangulation, the questionnaires were followed up by personal interviews with 11 members of Management to ensure the validity the reliability of the results. KAPIs were formulated for staff. However, respondents had a number of concerns in achieving these KAPIs. They include, inter-alia workloads, large class sizes, lack of resources, understaffing and unqualified staff. These concerns must be addressed if the KAPIs suggested for staff could be realised. A number of recommendations are made to achieve the KAPIs for staff at CUs.
