Abstract:
A Liberal Arts undergraduate education provides an effective context for a pedagogy of liberatory analysis that empowers students to ascertain their place in a global world. To enhance such an endeavor, Depth psychology provides a dynamic analytical lens through which the student can negotiate the interplay of self and other. A pedagogy that incorporates the critical cultural theory of Freire and Gramsci with elements of depth psychology that includes the concepts of the collective unconscious and the cultural complex, as well as the importance of imagery and imagination lends to students’ impetus to become creative in their efforts to become social change agents. My presentation will reveal how a depth psychological alignment within a liberal arts course became a way for a community of interdependent learners to utilize their skills to address anti-oppression.
