AI AND CONSERVATIVE EDUCATION: TOP DOWN OR BOTTOM UP?

Abstract:
AI offers a wide range of opportunities in the educational arena. However, uncritically replacing the involvement of humans is not the answer. Current research suggests that the key lies in harnessing the strengths of both humans and AI to create a more effective and beneficial learning and teaching experience. This study adopts a conceptual and comparative analytical approach. It contrasts the core strengths of AI in education with the defining characteristics of sound conservative education. AI-driven approaches excel in measurable, short-term gains through personalised and adaptive learning pathways, intelligent tutoring systems that provide instant feedback, automated assessment, content generation and curation, enhanced accessibility and inclusion, and learning analytics for early intervention. In contrast, sound conservative education views the family as the primary foundation and schools as formative (rather than performative) institutions. It prioritises the cultivation of enduring human qualities that resist easy quantification and yield long-term developmental benefits: Curiosity and enthusiasm: a genuine desire to explore and engage with new experiences; Resilience and determination: the persistence to continue when learning becomes difficult; Creativity and critical thinking: the ability to make connections, solve problems, and develop original ideas; Autonomy and engagement: taking ownership of one’s learning and participating actively; Conscientiousness: organisation, diligence, and a strong orientation toward achievement. These qualities are examined through two critical, largely non-measurable dimensions: time (long-term character formation versus short-term performance metrics) and emotion (the complex interplay of motivation, struggle, relationship, and meaning that cannot be fully captured by data). The broader educational picture, however, is actively configured by stakeholders from the world of business, trade, economy and politics who play a significant role in shaping global discussions on education, positioning it as a critical driver for economic growth, workforce readiness, innovation, equity, and adaptation to rapid technological change — particularly in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We conclude by arguing for an AI-supported and human-centred educational model grounded in grassroots, locally designed, and community-focused policies. In this framework, AI serves as a powerful servant—handling routine, scalable, and measurable tasks—while preserving and enhancing the relational, emotional, and formative human elements that define genuine education.Keywords:
