Abstract:
Active learning methodologies are invaluable education tools for their ability to deeply engage students, foster the practical application of theoretical knowledge, and develop critical skills essential for real-world challenges. This pedagogical framework spurred the inception of the ACUARIO Project, consisting of the utilization of an Aquarium as a versatile and multidisciplinary educational platform, conceived with the primary aim of strengthening links with real-world applications, fostering collaborative alignment across disciplines and promoting the holistic advancement of students’ specialized proficiencies and transferable skills in Science and Engineering courses. This paper outlines the design and implementation of aquarium-based active learning activities within the Chemical Engineering Degree program at Universitat Politècnica de València-Campus d’Alcoi. The innovation spans ten mandatory and elective courses across diverse disciplines (such as environmental science and technology, chemical process engineering and control or business organization, just to cite a few), delivered from the 2nd to 4th-year modules. A broad repertoire of distinct activities was developed, ranging from problem- and project-based to case studies to simulation to hands-on learning, designed to be deployed as standalone learning experiences or in blended class approaches. Evaluation surveys indicated that this innovation notably augmented student motivation, engagement, and interest in the subjects’ matter, consequently enhancing the comprehension of theoretical concepts through their practical application in real-world contexts. Concurrently, it fostered the development of competencies such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and autonomous as well as team-based work. Moreover, it helped strengthen curricular coordination to facilitate students’ coherent progression throughout their university trajectory.
