Abstract:
Computer systems engineering students consider that Discrete Mathematics is a complex course. They understand subjects related to logic of sets, demonstration methods, relations and graphics. Typically, the learning experience in this type of courses is formal and the examples considered are based on the textbook class of problems. Professors that offer this course are more interested in the motivation of students related to learning the course content, that students are able to gain a deeper knowledge on the subject and apply this knowledge in other areas of informatics, technology and computing. The goal is to change the traditional learning experience by a more profound experience that enhances the mathematical thinking skills of students. In this work, we present a learning experience which is taking place at the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), Campus Estado de México (CEM) with a group of students that is taking the course on Discrete Mathematics. We have designed the course by using games to support the learning-teaching process on those subjects where the students have proven difficulties. Finally, the answers provided by the students are analyzed and some of the results that were obtained in a survey applied to the students and professors, are discussed.
