Abstract:
Gamification is becoming a trending topic across different disciplines which include business, health care, and education. As an innovative teaching methodology, gamification has a great potential to motivate and to engage students in the learning process with a mix of educational content and entertainment. Examples of using gamification in education spread across a wide range of disciplines and knowledge areas including language learning, physics, arts, and physical education. However, research of the use of gamification in accounting education seems to be scarcer. Therefore, the main purpose of this research is to analyze to what extend gamification is being used in accounting courses. To achieve this goal a bibliometric analysis was conducted on documents retrieved from ISI Web of Science in order to summarize this stream of research into publication patterns, most keywords used, construct identification and themes addressed by researchers. Main results suggest an increasing interested in the topic by academics over the last years as suggested by the publication pattern. Main identified constructs and themes include educational outcomes, financial-related topics, motivation, postgraduate studies, and production-related topics. In the conclusion section, research gaps and future research lines are provided.
