Abstract:
This paper investigates the transformative role of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in engineering education, centered around our primary contribution: the GUIDES framework. The GUIDES framework —Grounded, Humane, Intentional, Dialogic, Experiential, and Self-Developing— articulates a multifaceted approach to integrating GenAI tools like ChatGPT into educational settings. It advocates for GenAI to transcend its role as a mere tool and become an active participant in a triadic dynamic with educators and students. This framework encourages a dialogic and active learning environment, leveraging GenAI's adaptability and interactivity. Essential to this framework are foundational concepts such as zero-shot and multi-turn interactions, and prompt engineering techniques, enabling educators to tailor GenAI for nuanced, responsive educational dialogues. GUIDES empowers educators to create collaborative classrooms where human and AI insights converge to tackle complex engineering challenges and guides students in using GenAI responsibly for deeper understanding and innovation.
