Abstract:
The presented research deals with a description and analysis of the examined sample of respondents from the point of view of self-concept and some chosen attributes in primary school pupils in the Czech Republic. Self-concept is a very extensive and complex construct. The content of the term - self-concept has a long and rich history and forms one of the oldest areas of research in the social and psychological sciences. The research sample consisted of 109 primary school children aged 9,48 ± 1,03. Following questions were solved within the research: Which attributes have children with high level of popularity within the class group? Which attributes have children with high levels of feelings of happiness? Which attributes have children with high level of anxiety? The research was done by the questionnaire method of the authors Piers, E., V., Herzberg, D.S. (2015) Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale, Second Edition. This is a 60-item self-assessment questionnaire with the subtitle How I perceive myself. Czech standardization is suitable for children and adolescents aged 9 to 18 years. Statistical procedures were used in the processing of the research survey data: t-test. The results of the research showed that high popularity levels among schoolmates corresponds with intelligence (p=0,01) and feelings of happiness (p=0,02). Significant relationships were found also among feelings of happiness and all components of self-concept except of freedom from anxiety (p=0,43). The anxiety factor (FRE) in relation to the intellectual property factor (INT) (p = 0.68) and physical appearance and properties (PHY) (p = 0.02) proved to be statistically significant. All asked research questions demonstrated the importance and significance of building a positive self-concept with the greatest possible elimination of anxiety and living conditions that can cause it. Therefore, it is important that children grow up in a stimulating and loving environment provided by both the family and the school (the personality of the teacher and the children's group). It is not always possible to grow up in such an environment, but it is a society-wide interest, so it is necessary to continue to research on this issue. The study was supported by the project IGA_PdF_2020_020.
