Abstract:
The educational mission of the class teacher in the Czech educational system is mostly characterized as the coordinating and integrating factor. The function of the class teacher brings about special and important tasks: generally, it is assumed that the class teacher is not only best informed of the overall educational and learning situation in his class but that he also disposes of information that is significant from the point of view of the educational development of individual pupils. The article is based on the assumption that the function of the class teacher includes a series of activities that other participants in the educational process of pupils may not even realize, which may lead to underestimation of the function of class teachers. The survey issue includes questions like what is the significance of function of the class teacher as attributed by the actual class teachers, what significance has this function according to the school management and what significance has this function according to the pupils and their parents.
The research in the form of a sample survey analyzes the significance of function of the class teachers from the point of view of the class teachers themselves, the school management, pupils of primary and secondary schools and their parents in the Czech Republic. For that purpose, a questionnaire was made for the class teachers, school management, pupils and their parents. On grounds of the written data we have completely refused our original assumption that the function of the class teacher was mostly underestimated. Whereas the class teachers assume that their function has been attributed a rather average significance, the results show that the attributed importance is much higher. The pupils and their parents, the school management and the class teachers themselves assign a great importance to the function of a class teacher.
