Abstract:
Internationalisation of higher education is one of the priorities of national governments, international organisations and higher education institutions at the same time. The new realities facing the higher education sector in the European Union, both internally and globally, are presenting changes, introducing new trends and posing different challenges for internationalization.
As a member state of the European Union, Romania has a lot to catch up when it comes to the internationalisation of its higher education. After 1990, the Romanian Ministry of Education did not promote appropriate policies to enter the international market for educational services, but currently a slow movement towards this direction can be identified. The main supporters of this trend are the institutions of higher education, more and more aware of the issues of visibility and competitiveness at international level.
This paper aims to track some of the major developments and achievements of the leading European countries in this respect, and to analyse the current status of the internationalisation of the Romanian higher education. The analysis will be done using the main indicators considered for measuring the internationalisation of higher education: mobility and exchanges for students and teachers, teaching and research collaboration, research projects, promotion and profile of institutions. Recommendations for increasing the internationality of the Romanian higher education will be made, considering the realities and peculiarities of this sector.
