Abstract:
The work presented in this paper is regarding a semantic engine for documents within an organization such as an educational unit, university, etc. It is done within the context of European project E! 9770 PrEmISES. The aim of the PrEmISES project is to help organizations such as educational units to better exploit their information spaces. This project is based on a consortium from academia and industry from two EU countries, respectively Romania and Spain. One central piece of the project is the creation of a semantic enabled engine for organizational documents to help the document search. The search is semantically enabled which means that the search engine is looking not only for the words of the search query of the user, but also to semantically related terms – semantically related with the search query words.

In this paper we present a quantitative research for determining the functional and non-functional requirements of the PrEmISES search engine. The sample was formed by 60 people with relevant background. We used purposive sampling. The questionnaire used consisted on questions related to the functional requirements of the systems and non-functional requirements such as performance, easy to use, fast response time, portability, high flexibility, security features, friendly UI. The questions were put on the site MonkeySurvey , sent to people and answers automatically collected. From the study, we find out that the following functional requirements are important: return relevant results, fast response time, capacity to be used in different computerized systems, friendly UI and the following non-functional requirements were considered important: portability (run on more OS, short learning time, easy to use, security features.

The paper presents the quantitative study that was made, together with the analysis of the results and its conclusions for determining the requirements of PrEmISES systems that are used for building its architecture and further its implementation to help people (students, teachers, etc.) from organizational units (such as educational units) to better exploit their information spaces.
