INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AND EXTERNAL EVALUATION OF PROGRAMS LEAD TO QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

Abstract:
The use of external and internal evaluation mechanisms is part of the implementation and development policy of educational programs. To this purpose, ATSU collaborates with the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement, with accredited universities in Georgia, with various international organizations and educational institutions.

All types of activities, approved for the evaluation of the educational program, are used for the evaluation of “Medical Doctor”. The external evaluation process was very important for improving ATSU MD programs and for preparing this programs according to the requirements of international accreditation standards.
For these purposes we have actively used: the external evaluation by expert Fellow of Higher Education Academy, UK and assessment of curriculum in the pilot mode of accreditation, planned by the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement. The group of the international Experts Panel reviewed the program.

The recommendations were reviewed by the Quality Service, which are also reflected in the university's general regulating documents and the results found a logical reflection in changes made in the educational program, the program has undergone important stages of adequate modification.

Results of internal and external evaluation of the program:
- Student-centered curriculum is created
- The degree of integration of basic and clinical subjects in the curriculum has been increased
- new teaching methods (CBL, PBL, CBCR) and assessment methods (OSCE, OSPE, DOPS) are implemented
- PBL is maintained widely, that enables the student to develop critical thinking skills, helping them develop a wide range of skills (problem solving, communication, interpersonal, teamwork, leadership skills).
- Elective courses have been increased in credits, they were expanded by humanitarian, as well as elective branch courses.
- Introduction of the community and student-oriented approaches, professional development aspects.
- Involving all the stakeholders in the program monitoring;
- Transparent and fair assessment system in line with the teaching methods defined by the program;
- The learning outcomes correspond to the qualification to be awarded, defined by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME), TUNING /MEDINE for the first step of medical education.

As a result of external evaluations, areas for improvement have also been identified.
