Abstract:
This study examines the role of sports in fostering social inclusion and personal development for individuals with intellectual disabilities, focusing on comparative experiences in Ireland and Bulgaria. Using life stories and semi-structured interviews from eight participants, the research employs a qualitative thematic analysis to explore recurring patterns such as empowerment, community support, and the impact of sports on overcoming stigma. Findings reveal that sports provide a transformative platform for building resilience, independence, and social skills. In Ireland, grassroots initiatives and community-driven efforts are pivotal, whereas Bulgaria relies heavily on structured, government-supported programs. Despite systemic and cultural differences, participants in both countries emphasized the empowering and inclusive nature of sports in shaping their identities and enabling societal integration. This study highlights the importance of tailored approaches to inclusive sports programs and provides actionable recommendations for policymakers, educators, and community organizations to enhance access and effectiveness. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on disability inclusion and the role of sports in personal development.
