Abstract:
Bibliometric analysis is a fundamental area of science that provides information that allows to extract quantitative conclusions about bibliographic materials. In the last decade, the use of bibliometric studies increased substantially due to the introduction of novel IT tools such as the Web of Science that concentrates references of the most relevant scientific publications in all disciplines. Large volumes of information have become available through open access resources including Google Scholar, and graphical tools have provided better ways to visualize results such as VOSviewer.

Bibliometric analysis has become a relevant tool in evaluating the quality of the knowledge generation process and the impact of such process in its context. Relevant information can be obtained about the most relevant articles on a specific topic and time span, identify the most cited articles, the h-index on the topic based on the number of citations, the most productive authors, the dominant areas of research, the organizations and universities with more presence, dominant languages, types of publications, among others.

The scientific process must be quantified, therefore bibliometric analysis is a robust strategy that can be used in different stages of scientific research. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the importance of bibliometric analysis as a methodology that provides valuable information in research activities in Higher Education.

The objective of this study is to show a general perspective supported on information derived from literature about the benefit that bibliometric analysis provides to make teaching activities more robust, especially those involving research in higher education. A bibliometric analysis about the concept of “bibliometric analysis” was performed in order to identify the results that responds to questions such as What is the publishing trend of “bibliometric analysis” related publications? Which countries/ territories have contributed to “bibliometric analysis research?, What are the influential publications in the “bibliometric analysis” field? What are the most influential publications in the “bibliometric analysis” field? What are the influential journals in the “bibliometric analysis” field?, Who has contributed to “bibliometric analysis “ research? among others.
