Abstract:
This study explores how instructors and practitioners experience martial arts as an arena for personal development, and which factors in the training environment may support this process. A qualitative, social constructivist approach was employed, using focus group interviews with practitioners and instructors across various martial arts disciplines (Boxing, Mixed martial arts, Kickboksing). Through reflexive thematic analysis, three key dimensions of development were identified: mastery (both physical and mental), social competence (through relational interaction), and personal development (through strengthened responsibility, self-discipline, and identity). Participants’ experiences of growth were situated within close-knit communities characterized by structured training, feedback, and shared values. These findings suggest that martial arts provide a multifaceted arena for psychological empowerment, social belonging, and values-based learning, offering insights relevant to fields such as sports science, developmental psychology, and education. For scholars and practitioners alike, the study underlines the importance of considering the psychological and social dimensions of martial arts participation.
