Abstract:
It reports a teaching experience for which the use of 3D modeling, digital and physical, has heightened students interest to increase knowledge of Castelmarte town urban center.
The ultimate goal of the survey was to made the physical model of part of territory which included the ancient mountain settlement, with the most significant buildings of social life: the town hall, the parish complex, the sports field, a small city park.

To achieve this, it was necessary to use different survey methods, integrating relief measures, with the survey digital instruments used in topography.

The return of survey was developed by integrating various 3D modeling software that subsequent passages, have led to the creation of a physical model, developed at the Laboratory of Prototyping the Politecnico di Milano, the entire historical city center.

Some images will document the various stages of work and different methods of relief and representation used.
They will show clearly the process of gradual advancement of knowledge which has been developed in the phase of physical modeling, regarding the morphology of the hilly terrain, the shape and mutual position of the buildings, the different slopes of the pitched roofs.
The method of digital modeling to create the physical model, requires extreme precision in the realization of the design and was therefore the stimulus to perform a detailed survey of the existing, at the same time has created the opportunity to learn to use different software and compare between them.
Learning was verified directly through the tangible result of the physical model, built on the basis of the 3D model, using a rapid prototyping machine.
