VIRTUAL MODELS: AUGMENTED REALITY AS A TEACHING TOOL FOR CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS

For years, the traditional way for architectural representation was based on the definition of general plans (plants, elevations, sections) or specific constructive details showing a two-dimensional perception of buildings. These 2D elements were easily understood by those skilled in the art; however, their understanding became more difficult for users without a great capacity for spatial vision (such as students in early stages).

For this reason, In the Degree of Building Engineering (University of Alicante) several activities have been developed combining virtual construction with mobile applications of augmented reality, generating a new teaching methodology for constructive subjects. In the first place, a three-dimensional definition of 30 constructive details has been made using modeling programs (as Sketchup). Subsequently, these 3D drawings have been inserted in a newly created application of Augmented Reality (software developed specifically by the team), based on markers identifying four construction families. Thus, every constructive detail can easily be easily visualized only by using a personal mobile to download the application.

In conclusion, it has been proven that a more technological application in classroom learning (taking advantage of the familiarity offered by virtual learning even from the pupil's own mobile phone) is an effective tool for a better three-dimensional understanding of constructive elements.
