Abstract:
The present study aims to investigate the effect of the usage of the augmented reality module of GeoGebra (an interactive application, intended for learning mathematics and science) on the development of students’ spatial mathematical skills through augmented reality.
The study also aims to describe the experience, the opportunities and the challenges met in the learning process. It was conducted with 3 groups of high school students at a school in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The experience gained shows that not only can GeoGebra significantly speed up the working process in math lessons and save a lot of time in certain cases, but with its visualization tools it can be very useful to students in understanding concepts that are easy for some but a nightmare for others. Among those is working with three-dimensional objects, and developing spatial mathematical skills in particular. A lot of students find it hard to imagine the essence of some 3D shapes and the process of their formation, especially without looking at them or by just looking at a 2-dimensional drawing.
GeoGebra has been around for a long time. While there are still many teachers who prefer using conventional means and do not dare to use any new tools and software in their math classes, for others using GeoGebra has become a routine and GeoGebra itself – a favorite choice.
This is where the mobile devices favored by all students come into play with GeoGebra’s relatively new augmented reality (AR) module.
Two avenues of using the AR module are explored:
• The one toward gaining personalized learning experience provided by the AR module to the students through the mobile application Geo Gebra 3D Calculator.
• The other toward revealing how teachers can teach and share a stereoscopic 3D experience with their students through the combination of zSpace (an All-in-One solution for AR education), GeoGebra and a special zView camera. Keywords:
