Abstract:
Geography textbook and workbook are part of the education system in Slovakia and Iceland. Teaching in both countries, however, proceeds very differently. The aim of this paper is a comparative analysis of textbooks and both school education systems. The differences are not only in the style of teaching, the evaluation of students, but also teachers approach to teaching and the students themselves. Students meet with teaching of the regional landscape geography in both countries already at the first stage of primary school. According to the new school reform in Slovakia is the subject of regional landscape geography given to the secondary school in the 9th grade and in Iceland in 5th grade. The difference in the education system is also in the fact that in Slovakia, geography is taught throughout the school year, while Iceland has the most schools teach only one semester. Evaluation of students in Slovakia is based mainly on theoretical knowledge contrary to Iceland on practical application of knowledge. Part of the paper is also the perception of students focused on teaching of the regional landscape geography through a questionnaire survey. In Iceland, protected areas and ecological problems are also an important part of this school subject, so we also focused on this area.
