Abstract:
While reflecting on inclusive learning, particularly when incorporating different cultural groups, it is important to consider student backgrounds, especially their home life and parental experiences. The Family Stress Model (FSM) was originally designed to consider economic stress and its impact on family units, but it has since been used to look at many other stressors that impact families at home such as acculturation stress, parenting styles, conflict resolution, and more. By applying FSM research to students who are dealing with economic or acculturation stress at home, it has shown that students who are impacted from such additional stress can struggle in the classroom. These struggles may be found through academic performance, language learning, and attitudes. By recognizing these potential pitfalls or signs that students may be dealing with such issues, educators could introduce intervention that will help mitigate potential difficulties. This virtual presentation will focus on how through a recent scoping review linking Asians and FSM, connections to family stress and education have been found in this community. This paper will briefly discuss issues highlighted by the review that have been found in Asian communities and some suggestions for future research considerations.
