The empirical part of the study is based on the application of methods of logical and comparative analysis, a standardized survey. One of the key research methods was the assessment-center. The paper presents the results of an online survey of the importance of developing the professional competencies of personnel management specialists in the labour market, conducted among 146 students and 100 employers in Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk. The survey data were compared with the results of the assessment center, which was attended by 85 students in the field of training "HR-Management" from 11 Russian universities and 30 assessors, heads of personnel management services of enterprises in Yekaterinburg. Based on the results of a one-way analysis of variance indicators of preliminary assessment and self-assessment of the level of development of competencies, as well as the final indicators of the assessment center, it was concluded that there are significant differences in group means and weak correlation of the results of self-assessment and assessment of student competencies.
