Abstract:
Project-based learning (PBL) is a methodology that has received attention in higher education in recent years. It involves using projects to develop practical skills, apply theory and gain insights into content. This approach has become popular because of its potential to improve learning outcomes and foreign language skills, foster critical thinking, and prepare students for the labour market. However, there are also challenges that educators must overcome in order to implement it effectively. This article explores the advantages and challenges of PBL in higher education by analysing the results of a survey administered to students of Spanish for Catering II, English for Catering II, and German II, from the Catering Management degree, of a Portuguese Polytechnic Institute, after a gastronomic event prepared by those students and held at that institute. By highlighting the advantages and challenges associated with PBL, this article aims to provide educators with a clear understanding of this approach and strategies for overcoming the challenges in its implementation. Ultimately, the aim is to promote the use of PBL in higher education, in foreign language (FL) teaching and to improve the quality of learning experiences for students.
