Abstract:
In this paper, the authors delve into the field of personal digital narratives, exploring their role in cultural diversity and sustainability while fostering their potential for online learning. In the context of the rapid shift from traditional to digital education, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, understanding the implications and possibilities of this transition is of utmost importance. The authors propose an e-learning model centred around digital personal narratives.

Considering the current landscape of digital teaching tools and online learning, the potential of audiovisual narratives for learning, identity formation, and cultural preservation is undeniable. With the widespread availability of audiovisual recording and editing tools and their ease of dissemination on social media and other web platforms, these narratives can serve as powerful tools for teaching and learning, particularly in the context of minority communities.

Our research journey begins with a comprehensive review of the literature on audiovisual personal narratives and their impact on community cultural sustainability. We then analyse and compare digital filmic artefacts shaping contemporary society, focusing on their role in media literacy and their potential as e-learning facilitators.

Then, we analyse some representative entertaining and pedagogical environments that explore the concept of personal narrative as interactive films or integrated into hypermedia semantic approaches to spot fundamental characteristics shaping a proper virtual pedagogical model for online higher education. We compare these spots against the classic open pedagogical virtual model of the Portuguese Open University, an internationally recognised reference.

Finally, after comparing the results, we propose and discuss the general lines of a virtual pedagogical model for open distance learning/teaching in higher education, integrating personal digital narratives as core tools.
