Abstract:
This study develops a two-step approach methodology in order to identify higher education institutions (HEIs) inputs and outputs that are potentially linked to regional quality of life (RQoL), using a qualitative approach funded on semi-structured interviews, which were conducted to relevant HEI’s stakeholders. The evidence points out that the most relevant inputs are related to the economic support and expenses of HEIs, as well as the employability and supply of qualified labor force; and the most relevant outputs are linked to human capital, research results and location factors linked to foreign direct investment, start-ups, high-tech enterprises, etc. Regarding inputs, although in general all indicators were considered important for the proper functioning of HEIs, and therefore all contribute and tend to have an impact on the RQoL, in some cases perceptions on both aspects (overall functioning and impact of the institution versus influence on RQoL) may differ. Regarding outputs, two aspects were mentioned, in particular, as antecedents of RQoL improvement: community development and more active participation of the population as a contribution to greater civic engagement; and also the development of services (public and private), health, public transport, local commerce, welfare and leisure. This study is innovative in the way that it goes beyond quantitative indicators of QoL, presenting qualitative indicators that were found based on the visions of stakeholders. Keywords:
