Abstract:
The questions about relationship of the whole and its´ parts have a special position in school mathematics. They are linked to the other mathematical structures whose understanding influences the conceptual process. It is in focus of many researches but they still remain as a one of the main problems in mathematics teaching and learning (Tichá, Macháčková, 2006).The article is focused on the coding and quantitative and qualitative analysis of fraction tasks´ solutions focused on part-whole subconstruct of fractions. These tasks are part of the specially fraction test developed by Cypriot researchers Marilena Pantziara and George Phillipou. First, all – the correct and incorrect answers were coded and then the categories based on the ways of individual tasks solutions were identified. Based on these categories the misconceptions and pupils´ thought processes could be determined. This was followed by quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the results. The research sample consisted of 930 fifteen years old pupils who were graduated at the elementary school. Data were collected in May and June 2017 at the 35 elementary schools in Slovakia.
