Abstract:
Within the framework of the educational activities offered by the Universitat Sènior of the Universitat Politècnica de València, a course entitled Cultural Routes through El Cabanyal-Canyamelar-Cap de França has been implemented. This initiative seeks to promote the appreciation of the architectural and urban heritage of Valencia’s historic maritime neighbourhoods through an experiential learning approach. The course provides an active and participatory learning experience addressed to older adult learners (aged 55 and over), aiming to strengthen the connection between the university community and its surrounding heritage environment.

The main objective of this initiative is to encourage the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of architectural heritage through direct observation, critical reflection, and the exchange of experiences among participants. The routes help learners to understand the historical evolution of the district, its building typologies—from traditional barracas to modernist houses—and the urban transformations that have shaped its current identity. Furthermore, the course highlights the relationship between heritage, sustainable tourism, and quality of life, emphasising the importance of a development model that respects collective memory.

Methodologically, the proposal combines short theoretical classroom sessions with thematic itineraries carried out in situ, supported by graphic materials, historical maps, and real testimonies. This experiential approach fosters meaningful learning, enhances observation and analytical skills, and promotes the active participation of older adult learners. Among the most significant results, participants demonstrated increased awareness and sensitivity regarding the need to preserve the architectural and cultural values of Valencia’s coastal heritage. Overall, this teaching experience underscores the potential of experiential learning as an effective tool for heritage education and for strengthening social and cultural participation.
