Abstract:
The article studies the issue of competencies of modern specialists of international level highlighting the skills of consecutive interpretation as key ones. Focusing on the specificity and complexity of the process of interpreting texts of the source language into students’ native language and vice versa, the authors describe such a notion as ‘cross-language asymmetry’ and give examples of difficulties that students may face for this reason.

The objective of the research is the analysis of main mistakes which students make when processing bilingual (English-Russian and Russian-English) consecutive interpretation of business dialogues and ways of preventing them.

The research methodology includes such methods as generalization and classification, observation and experiment, induction and deduction. For conveying the theoretical and methodological base of the phenomena under consideration, the authors apply the method of analysis of scientific and methodical literature. This set of methods helps thoroughly characterize the process of consecutive interpretation, accurately identify the causes of translation failures, find ways of correcting them, and work out the modes of future work with such dialogues.

The research allows the authors to describe the most common translation mistakes arising in the process of students’ mastering skills of bilingual consecutive interpretation, to explain their possible causes, and to suggest corrective exercises of preventing and eliminating these mistakes as one of the types of propaedeutic work
