Abstract:
The given article is devoted to a problem conditioned by the growing need for international specialists capable of high language performance within the context of professional communication, possessing such competences as the art of conversation, negotiation, debate and oratorical skills that obviously include ranging methods of the pragmatic effect which in turn is based on a vivid set of linguistic devices designed to enhance communicative effectiveness of discourse.

Consequently, the object of the investigation is the functional potential of the English verbs of communication in business discourse as to possible means of increasing pragmatic efficiency and consistency of the business partners’ speech. The authors favour business discourse in particular, as is makes up a source of up-to-date trends in the strongly sought for sector of global communication. Hence scripts of business negotiations, interviews and political debates make the empirical material of this investigation.

The methodology of the investigation in question comprises elements of corpus-based linguistics, methods of the linguistic description, including the component analysis, interpretation, comparison, generalization and classification techniques, methods of the contextual and semantic analyses, pragmatic-functional analysis, induction and deduction. The methods listed above are applicable within the functional, systemic and synergetic approaches that grant communicants a chance to consider the language phenomenon in question from different angles as a developing functional system.

In conclusion the authors find that those communicants, the participants of the business negotiation process, dispose a high level of communicative competence who are capable of perceiving and determining the pragmatic potential of language units, in this investigation – verbs of communication, and managing them in a due way. Thus, in order to achieve a high adaptability level of the discourse system, flexibility and relativity and, consequently, get the desirable result the authors emphasize the importance of basics of functional analyses in the course of mastering language.
