Abstract:
Simulation of financial market activity, including trading, is central to creating immersive, experiential applications of fundamental finance concepts. Simulation-based experiential learning enables students to integrate finance theory with real-world market dynamics, fostering deeper engagement and understanding. This closely aligns with RMIT University’s active, authentic and applied signature pedagogy. This paper presents an innovative teaching and learning initiative that requires students to apply their disciplinary knowledge in a simulated real-world scenario, using a variety of learning spaces and information platforms.

Student feedback confirms the effectiveness of simulation in achieving higher engagement and superior learning outcomes in support of extant literature in the field. Our research shows that the combination of information platforms, simulation tools and a dedicated laboratory learning space influences engagement and learning outcomes. We found that simulation-based assessments within the dedicated trading environment optimised efforts to engage in appropriate, authentic use of AI tools.
