Abstract:
The global construction industry, employing 7% of the world's workforce and contributing 13% to the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), holds a crucial position in global economies. In the United States, it significantly impacts a considerable portion of the population. However, the industry faces challenges such as declining productivity, workplace safety, and work disputes, necessitating the involvement of construction project managers. Identifying training gaps and linking qualified project managers with suitable projects necessitates a thorough understanding of their essential competencies. Through a previous study, we identified 21 skills imperative for construction project managers, encompassing their associated knowledge areas and personality characteristics. To evaluate the significance of these competencies, a survey with 672 ranking questions was developed, employing an innovative design framework. Each participant received a random selection of 21 ranking questions to ensure fairness. Data was collected from 2,016 academics worldwide. This paper focuses on the importance of these competencies for the ability to create and update construction project schedules. The findings aim to guide construction academia in prioritizing competency development areas, designing relevant courses, and formulating curricula to meet the needs of the global workforce effectively.
