Abstract:
As artificial intelligence (AI) tools rapidly enter K–12 classrooms, elementary teachers need practical guidance on how to use these technologies responsibly and effectively. This presentation outlines a research-informed professional development curriculum designed to help elementary educators integrate AI into instruction while promoting digital citizenship, equity, and creativity. The curriculum was developed through a mixed approach that included surveys of practicing teachers and pre-service educators to identify their concerns, confidence levels, and training needs related to AI in the classroom. Findings from these surveys highlighted a strong demand for accessible tools, ethical guidance, and ready-to-implement lesson strategies.

Workshop materials were then designed and refined based on educator feedback and a review of current research on AI trends in education, including generative AI, differentiation tools, and bias awareness. The resulting training model includes interactive modules on AI foundations, ethical classroom use, teacher productivity, and student engagement across subject areas. Pilot implementations with educators demonstrated increased confidence in explaining AI concepts to students and in designing AI-enhanced lessons.

This presentation will share the curriculum framework, sample materials, and preliminary outcomes, offering attendees a replicable model for preparing future and current teachers to integrate AI thoughtfully and equitably into elementary learning environments.
