Abstract:
The biometrics is a discipline which deals with the person’s automatic identification based upon physical or behavioural characteristic. An ideal biometrics characteristic should be universal, unique, permanent, collectable and acceptable. The contact biometrics methods such as fingerprint, palm print, iris, signature, walk etc. differ from the contactless biometrics methods such as face recognition, voice recognition, typing dynamics, scent etc. The aim of this study was to explore perception and attitudes toward emerging technology of biometrics among students of J. J. Strossmayer University of Osijek in Croatia. The method used in this study was conducting a survey by means of an online questionnaire during January 2023. The research results obtained in this study revealed that 89,5% of students used the biometrics technology before the study. The fingerprint and the signature were the most employed biometrics methods among them. Although 95,6% of students perceived that biometrics technology makes life easier only 38,6% of them claimed that biometrics is really necessary. Regarding advantages of biometrics students have primarily pointed out easiness of use. However, regarding disadvantages of biometrics they accentuated the high price of biometrics technology and the potential threats to the personal data security. Among the main challenges students pointed out the spoofing (23,7%), the false acceptance rate (18,4%), the false rejection rate (13,2%), the deep fake (12,3%) etc. Furthermore, 21,9% of students perceived the biometrics technology as an invasive technology and even an unhealthy according to 4,4% of them. The obtained research results point to the conclusion that in spite of certain negative aspects of the biometrics technology the trust in biometrics technology have had even 81,6% of students encompassed within the study. The results cannot be generalized thus the study was conducted on a sample of students of the one university in Croatia. However, the results indicate that the biometrics technology is a very promising emerging technology and a topic for further studies.
