Abstract:
The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) is a modern, pioneering University offering education and high level research in leading branches of science and technology. The CUT was founded by law on December 2003 and welcomed its first students on September 2007. It is based at the city of Limassol. It consists of six faculties (Faculty of Geotechnical Sciences and Environmental Management, Management and Economics, Communication and Media Studies, Health Science, Fine and Applied Arts, Engineering and Technology and the Language Centre (LC)).
The courses of the CUT in the six Faculties are taught in Standard Modern Greek, one of the two official languages of the Republic of Cyprus (Country Report, Cyprus, 2004).
However, from the first days of its operation in September 2007, the Cyprus University of Technology also established a Language Centre. The CUT LC specializes in the following areas: Language for Specific Purposes (LSP), Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Second Language (L2) Teacher Training, and Curriculum Development (printed and online).
The Centre offers to its students, administrative and teaching staff and to the wider community the opportunity to learn languages in a very friendly environment and with the use of the latest learning theories, L2 methods, approaches and materials and CALL. The languages taught are: Greek, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Russian. The Language Centre is a Language Centre of excellence, internationally recognised in those areas.
The Language Centre in collaboration with the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts also offers a Master in Computer Assisted Language Learning (MA in CALL). The programme aims to meet the needs of local practising teachers and language teachers worldwide. Furthermore, it aims to develop the knowledge and skills needed today for professional careers in teaching second / foreign language with the use of new technologies at all levels of education (pre-primary, primary, secondary, tertiary). It focuses on learning theories, pedagogical methods and technological applications in language teaching. It is consistent with contemporary learning theories and methods in language teaching as well as dealing with the theories and methods of application of new technologies in teaching and learning languages taught as a second (L2) or as a Foreign Language (FL).
Additionally the Language Centre offers doctorates studies in CALL related subjects. These studies aim to educate and scientifically train quality researchers. The CUT LC generally promotes communication, interculturalism and higher level education and research.
