Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence has grown a lot during the last decades. Many fields, especially online education, use Artificial Intelligence to address issues such as student retention and performance or help educators design their courses more efficiently. However, using tools and services based on Artificial Intelligence can generate issues related to trust and ethics, and online education can be no exception. These problems emerge from data handling and protection and how these systems work. Most of the solutions currently used for educational data mining and content creation are based on complex models that educational experts do not understand. As a result, end users (e.g., teachers and learners) seem not to trust or find these systems reliable. Based on this assumption, this work examines the role of Artificial Intelligence-based systems in education during the last decades and the emerging challenges in Ethics and Trust. Finally, the role of Transparency and Explainability will also be presented as a way to solve challenges related to Ethics and Trust.
