Abstract:
Puzhou opera is also called Puju because it originated in Puzhou. It is one of the important Chinese operas because of its long history and its influence on other opera genres in China. Like other traditional genres, this opera faces the issue of extinction and measures to sustain this art form are continuously implemented.

This paper mainly focuses on the process of institutionalization of Puzhou opera in Yuncheng University in which some innovative approaches are implemented. The propagation mode of folk opera culture has gradually changed from live performance and newspaper publicity to TV, film performance and online network publicity, particularly during the Covid19 pandemic. In the process of the institutionalization of Puzhou opera, Yuncheng University began to offer a Puzhou opera major from 2017 with emphasis on the integration of film and television courses. In addition, the traditional opera program also adds other interdisciplinary courses, such as western music theory, multimedia technology and application, to promote traditional opera with other art forms and with it a possibility of developing new forms of opera. This paper explores how these courses assist and promote the development and the sustainability of Puzhou opera.

Before the 20th century, Puzhou opera replied solely on the mode of live theater performance and this has hindered the transmission and sustainability of the genre. Since the 20th century, the film and television industry, along with the Internet, have served as the main means of cultural transmission, and are also being used by many folk genres. Therefore, in the process of institutionalization of Puzhou opera in Yuncheng University, students are required to add film and television content to their learning courses. Through the combination of these courses, the production team and performers can understand how to access the use the Internet, film and television to perform Puzhou opera. Hopefully this kind of multidisciplinary curriculum setting will enhance the development of Puzhou opera.
