Abstract:
The article concentrates on the problems connected with teaching the design of residential areas presented in the context of education conducted at the Faculty of Architecture, Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice. The present study is based on educational activities undertaken within the few last years in the Department of Urban and Spatial Planning.
The article objective is to show the educational process and its role in driving future architects and spatial planners towards shaping the urbanized space in a way that corresponds to contemporary urban trends and challenges, the needs of local government and the needs of users.
The way of passing knowledge about the city and urban planning processes takes place in urban space in lectures and design exercises, requires students to constantly analyze, draw conclusions, and sensible design. It is also important to select topics, resulting from the cooperation with social participants, to encourage greater involvement of students in the work on the residential areas problems. Such approach to the didactic process influences the constant improvement and updating of the content of education. The key is that the teaching of urban planning at a university does not diverge from reality, and the graduates of the architecture faculty were high quality specialists in the field of urbanization and the creation of modern urban residential areas.Keywords:
