Abstract:
Since the Republic of Kazakhstan got its independence in 1991, it has been actively introducing the principles of democracy into the political and social spheres, creating the civic society and modern system of education. In order to integrate into the world educational community the country strives to create its national competitive model which should correspond to the international standards and meet the demands of each individual and the society as well.

The paper deals with the important changes that are currently taking place in the system of education of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It highlights the basic reforms which include Lisbon ratification, joining the Bologna process, a number of laws and normative documents issued by the Government and the Ministry of Education and Science, integration and internationalisation of higher education, introduction of credit system, international cooperation and global partnerships, assessment and accreditation processes, and others.

It also provides the information on one of the leading Universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Kazakh-British Technical University (KBTU). Though it is a new university (it was founded in 2001) it has already got its own image and is very popular among students, their parents and employers. Its graduates are well recognised at the national and international level. The author shares KBTU's challenges and experiences due to the reforms in the sphere of education.

The paper will promote the dialogue between the world universities and that of Kazakhstan, stimulate their cooperation in staff exchange and students’ mobility, joint projects and research, two diploma educational programs, creation of joint international universities and other educational issues.
