Abstract:
The use of technology in design functions in theatre production (and therefore in training) has grown enormously in the past ten years. Scenic design now encompasses projections, video and installations. Lighting design merges the world of theatre and concert performance, almost unlimited in scope. But the teaching of acting and directing has not kept pace with technology. One enters a dark room, and turning on the lights is the only moment of engaging with the electronic age. Performance training has a small component of intellectual skill building and large components of emotive, physical and vocal training modules.

This paper will explore new methods of using technology in the training of actors and directors. The use of pre-class workshops, giving information in text, aural and video snapshots, and testing specific skills in preparation for the practical, will be addressed in this paper.
