Abstract:
Internationalisation of higher education (IHE) has been used to cover a range of strategies and activities universities undertake in order to facilitate mobility of students for learning and training. Arguably, the most important objective of international universities is to attract students from outside their regional or national boundaries. However, aiming to offer a global experience as well as knowledge and skills for a global labour market to local students, HEIs have also moved towards what is called internationalization at home (IaH), a trend which illustrates an institution’s efforts to change vision, action and plans to give such knowledge and skills to its students who do not wish to travel abroad for education. Approaches and implementation of both internationalization of HEIs and IaH vary widely, being strongly corelated with local contexts, resources and integration of the internationalization strategy into the wider strategic plan of a HEI. Seen both as different from and complementary to IaH, Internationalisation of the curriculum (IoC) means taking international planning and strategy to a molecular level by incorporating global dimensions into all aspects of the curriculum (Leask 2015). The present pilot study aims to review the concepts of IaH and IoC and their complex interplay in the context of Romanian HE, with the view of bringing forward components of IaH and IoC, actions specific to these trends, and levels of implementation as reflected in formal and informal institutional policies. Keywords:
