Abstract:
The paper addresses the ICT-based language learning focused on the acquisition of basic vocabulary and communication skills in the road traffic sector by presenting the EU co-funded Leonardo da Vinci TOI project “Eurotraffic Language Learning”(ETRALT). The main aim of the project is to develop a free web-based language course with clearly structured and audio-visually supported exercises as a transparent tool for linguistic preparation for mobility and for teaching workplace-related language learning at traffic and police schools as well as to offer language learning support to the professionals of the target sector. The contents are based on the evaluation of the surveys collected from the target groups for the needs analysis. The ETRALT course as the main product of the project shall fill the gaps in modern, cross-curricular vocationally oriented language teaching/learning materials by making the course applicable for integration into the curriculum, particularly into the new modules of the reformed VET programme. It shall also respond to the need of transport SMEs for time-saving and user-friendly language training course which can be used either for guided learning or self-study at any place with internet access. And finally, the course shall offer language learning support to professionals in the traffic sector and frequent road travellers to communicate more efficiently in problem situations on the road. It can be used as an example of good practice for web-based language learning in vocational education and training as well as a model for further transfer to other sectors. The presentation will include an overview of the course structure, demonstration of different types of exercises and the feedback on the pilot testing.
