Abstract:
The internationalization of higher education has encouraged the adoption of innovative teaching methodologies that promote intercultural learning and professional skills development. In this context, Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) has emerged as an effective pedagogical approach to foster international collaboration without physical mobility. This paper presents a case study of a COIL experience developed between a Spanish university and a Mexican university within the framework of Audiovisual Communication studies.
Since the academic year 2023–2024, students from both institutions have participated in a joint project focused on the design and production of a television program broadcast nationally in Mexico. Mixed international teams were formed to collaboratively develop the audiovisual content, working remotely and coordinating creative, technical, and organizational tasks under joint academic supervision. The project was integrated into the regular curriculum and followed a project-based learning approach.
The main objective of this project is to analyze the educational value of this international collaborative experience in terms of student motivation, acquisition of audiovisual competencies and development of transversal skills such as teamwork, intercultural communication and professional responsibility. The methodology is based on a qualitative descriptive analysis, drawing on the instructor’s observations, students’ self-assessments and the evaluation of the final audiovisual outputs.
The results indicate a positive impact on both technical and creative learning outcomes. Students reported increased motivation, greater awareness of professional audiovisual workflows and improved communication skills in an international context. The paper concludes by discussing the potential of COIL projects in audiovisual education, as well as the challenges encountered and future lines of improvement for similar initiatives. Keywords:
