TEACHING FOR EXPLORATION: A TEACHING AND LEARNING PERSPECTIVE ON SUPPORTING UNDERGRADUATE LEARNING

Abstract:
Many first-year undergraduate students enter higher education with limited experience in exploratory learning and a strong reliance on structured instruction developed through prior schooling. This transition can result in uncertainty, hesitation, and a reluctance to engage with open-ended learning tasks. Within creative disciplines in particular, students often perceive creativity as an innate ability rather than a process that develops through experimentation, reflection, and iteration. As a result, educators are increasingly challenged to support students in developing the confidence and curiosity required for exploratory learning. Despite its importance, exploration is rarely taught explicitly within early undergraduate teaching practices.
This paper investigates how “teaching for exploration” can support undergraduate learning by intentionally embedding exploratory activities into first-year classroom practice. The study responds to a pedagogical gap where students are expected to think creatively and independently without being guided in how to approach uncertainty and experimentation. It proposes that when exploration is framed as a structured and supported learning process, students are more likely to engage actively with ideas and develop confidence in their learning.
The study adopts an autoethnographic methodological approach, drawing on reflective teaching practice within a first-year Creative Development module at a private higher education design institution in South Africa. The cohort consisted of approximately thirty-five first-year students. Insights were generated through reflective teaching journals, classroom observations, informal student dialogue, and the analysis of student-generated artefacts produced during exploratory classroom activities. As the study reflects on teaching practice rather than collecting formal participant data, ethical clearance was not required.
The exploratory interventions examined include time-based drawing challenges, object-based exploration exercises where students bring personal items representing their interests and facilitated peer discussions that encourage students to share emerging ideas. These activities were designed to create low-stakes environments in which students could experiment, reflect, and engage with the learning process rather than focusing solely on final outcomes.
Reflective analysis suggests that structured exploratory activities increased student participation, reduced visible hesitation during ideation tasks, and encouraged collaborative dialogue within the classroom. Students also demonstrated greater willingness to share unfinished work and generate multiple ideas during early-stage activities, indicating a shift from performance-driven learning toward exploratory engagement.
The paper concludes that teaching for exploration plays a critical role in supporting undergraduate learning development. By intentionally designing classroom environments that encourage curiosity, experimentation, and reflective engagement, educators can help students develop confidence, resilience, and independence in their learning processes. It is recommended that exploratory teaching strategies be embedded within first-year curricula to better support student transition and engagement in higher education learning environments.Keywords:
